A man has been hospitalised after being shot at a property in Upper Enham near Andover.

A short time later, a motorcyclist wanted by police in connection with the incident failed to stop and crashed on the A343. He died at the scene.

What happened 

Police were called to an address in MacCallum Road following a report of an assault just after 3pm on Wednesday. 

A 42-year-old man had been shot and suffered serious injuries.

A man wanted in connection with the incident hopped on a motorbike and failed to stop for police.

They were involved in a collison the A343 Newbury Road. The motorcyclist died at the scene. 

What is the condition of the victim?

The 42-year-old man who was shot is currently receiving treatment at Southampton General Hospital.

His injuries are said to be serious. 

Where abouts did the incident occurr? 

The shooting happened at a property on MacCallum Road in Upper Enham which is a rural country lane with just a handful of homes, farms and a motorcycle garage. 

The exact address at this stage is not known. 

What have the police said? 

In a statement to The Advertiser, a spokesman said: "We have launched an investigation after a man was shot this afternoon, (Wednesday, August 5) in Upper Enham near Andover shortly after 3pm. 

"Officers were called to an address in MacCallum Road following a report of an assault on a man.

"It's now known the 42-year-old victim was shot and received serious injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at Southampton General Hospital.

"A motorcycle failed to stop for officers in connection with this incident. 

"A short time later a motorbike crashed on the A343 near Hurstbourne Tarrant and the road has been closed while emergency services attend.  The motorcyclist died at the scene.

"A mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been made.

"Armed police were also seen visiting an address in Enham Alamein as part of this investigation."

Why has the police referred the incident to the IOPC? 

Whenever someone dies while being pursued or involved in a police chase of any kind, the force will automatically refer itself to the IOPC.
