FOUR Guides from Basingstoke have helped a school thousands of miles away.

The Guides from 2nd Brighton Hill Guides joined forces with other Guides from Ascot and self-funded a trip to Cuernavaca in Mexico in the summer, as well as raising money for The Firefighters Charity.

While they were in Mexico, they helped out at an underprivileged school undertaking a service project.

The Guides spent time assisting with craft activities, singing songs and helping to unload and serve food.

Their leader, Sarah Lewendon, said: “The school was in an extremely underprivileged area with children being taught in a school where the kitchen has no running water and meals are provided by a local charity. It was the most humbling experience, and left us, as well as the girls, feeling extremely grateful for the lives that we lead.”

As a parting gift, the girls also donated funds to the school to go towards installing a plumbing unit for running water.

They also visited the Girlguiding World Centre ‘Our Cabana’ there, and joined in with fellow Guides from Chile and Wales in volunteering and taking part in other fun activities.
