TWO people were taken to hospital for treatment after a car crash involving 'two seven-week-old babies'.

Police were called at 5.39pm last night to Aldermaston Road, close to its junction with Salters Heath Road, to reports of a collision involving three vehicles.

Officers reported a Vauxhall Zafira, Nissan Pulsar, and a Volkswagen Golf were involved and three people sustained minor injuries. South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said two people were taken to hospital for treatment.

One local resident who did not wish to be named said 'two seven-week-old babies' were in one of the cars involved.

They said: "The babies were OK but being checked by ambulance [staff] when I went back inside at the request of the police who were trying to manage the number of people at the scene.

"The car with the babies in was at the front. They [had] indicated and slowed to pull into the lay-by.

"The white car behind slowed to allow the first car to turn in but the [driver of the VW] Golf ended up hitting the white car which then hit the first blue car with the babies in.

"The white car had in it a young couple and a dog.

"The female passenger cut her face and the male driver was complaining of neck pain. The man in the blue Golf was in his mid 40s and wasn’t injured."

A dog in the boot of the white car was also injured and has had to undergo minor surgery as a result.

A SCAS spokeswoman added it was first called at 5.35pm but was first told its services were not required before a second call at 5.47pm with staff arriving at 6.12pm to begin assessing patients.

Police have also confirmed that a 48-year-old man from Pamber Heath was arrested at the scene, but was taken to hospital and subsequently de-arrested.

A police investigation remains ongoing.
