HAPPY New Year and welcome to the first Flashback Thursday of 2019.
This week we take a look back at 1973 in Basingstoke.
Notable events included the opening of the AA’s Fanum House, a strike by bus drivers causing chaos at the bus station, the new Basingstoke District Hospital opening and popular restaurant The Venture being demolished to make way for a new hotel.
1973 was also a notable year for many other events in the UK.
These included:
• Stanley Kubrick’s new film A Clockwork Orange opening in cinemas including the ABC in Basingstoke
• The United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and Denmark enter the European Economic Community
• British Leyland launches its new Austin Allegro, a range of two and four door family saloon cars.
• Some Mothers Do Ave 'Em starring Michael Crawford beginning on BBC1
• Pizza Hut opening its first UK restaurant in Islington
