A COMMUNITY mental health nurse has gone the extra mile to help out a charity.
Shona Wang, from Basingstoke, was part of the 65 strong Harrison’s Racing team running for Harrison’s Fund at the Surrey Half Marathon on Sunday, 10 March.
The 31-year-old managed to raise £100 for the cause, with more than £11,000 raised by the team overall which will go towards the charity’s work funding research into Duchenne - a rare genetic condition which affects all the muscles in the body, causing them to waste away.
Shona, who ran with her friend Shelley Budd, said: “I came across the charity whilst browsing the Surrey Half Facebook page and I felt compelled to sign up then and there and the day did not disappoint.
“My favourite part was the great support from Harrison’s Fund and I loved the unity from their other runners. As soon as a mutual noticing of each other’s vests you got a thumbs up or a wave! I’ve never had this recognition before, and I’ve run 25 half marathons for numerous charities including the London Marathon.”
Laura Morgan, events fundraiser at Harrison’s Fund said: “Well done to Shona, Shelley, and all our runners and what a brilliant amount to have raise. Since we began taking part in this event we have raised more than £50,540 towards our research which is a tremendous amount and has meant we can really begin to make some strong advances with our research work.”
