CONSTRUCTION students from Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) were recently welcomed onsite by Osborne Construction to go behind the scenes and explore the huge variety of roles within the industry.

Staff and 19 students from BCoT visited Osborne’s West Downs Development site at the University of Winchester, as part of a week-long event aimed at attracting more young people into a career in construction.

Open Doors Week, which was delivered by Build UK in partnership with the CITB from March 18 to March 23, saw a number of live construction sites opened to the members of the public to give an inside look at the world of construction.

Anthony Bravo, principal of BCoT, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Osborne for hosting our staff and students.

“The site visit encouraged our students to see past the traditional trades they learn about at college and highlighted the career progression that is possible to our students.

“It was fantastic for our students to see the content of their course brought to life and to make the hours of theory they study feel tangible.”

Andrew Osborne, chairman at Osborne said: “We are delighted to be participating in Open Doors once again and particularly excited to open the West Downs Development and Hobhouse Court to the public.

“It is a great platform for us to showcase to young people the variety of skills, knowledge and collaboration needed to successfully deliver construction projects.”

Construction students at BCoT learn from experienced lecturers who have spent time working in the industry, within a purpose-built facility. Students have the chance to gain experience in the workplace with employers.
