A POPULAR community event returned for its third year- with a distinctly Western theme.

The Winklebury Gala made its third appearance in Winklebury Way, with this year’s theme being ‘cowboys and aliens.’

Around 600 people went out in the sweltering Saturday sun on June 29 to enjoy the festivities.

The event managed to raise a total of just under £1,000, with a portion of the money being donated the Sycamore Halls Community Centre and the rest being kept to help with next year’s event.

In the arena, Crazy Corin was on hand in half an hour sessions to entertain the younger contingent.

Performing in the main arena was a group from Spotlight Dance Academy, the Winklebury School choir and the first time performance of Kala the Arts.

Basingstoke Model Air Club was displaying on the top field, with many people going to see the display.

Also making an appearance was Lennie the Lion, the mascot of the Basingstoke Lions Club, who braved the heat to collect for the organisation.

Shirley Keer, chair of the Winklebury Gala Committee, said: “While it was extremely hot, we still had a lot going on and we were busy for most of the day.

“As well as the performances in the arena, we also had plenty of stalls for people to enjoy.

“We enjoyed the weather and had another successful event.”
