PEOPLE’S generosity is being praised as hundreds of donations have been collected to aid needy women in Africa.

Peter Good, from Overton, became aware of the charity organisation ZARBRA three months ago and heard about the plight of women in African countries who cannot afford any underwear.

In his position as assistant almoner for the British South Africa Police (BSAP) regimental association, covering Hampshire, he wanted to see what he could do to help the charity which aims to support women in Africa.

Mr Good visited a number of stores around Basingstoke asking if he could put up flyers asking for donations for underwear and bras, which would then be flown out to various counties.

The volunteer thought he may get a few donations, but three months later he had enough to fill a bin bag with lots more coming in.

He said: “I couldn’t believe how many donations that we had. What makes it even more fantastic is that these people have done it completely selfishly.

“Staff at some of the stores said they were surprised how kind people have been.”

With Mr Good sending off the first lot of donations to the charity, he received a letter of thanks from the charity stating how amazing the people of Basingstoke had done.

In the letter from ZEBRA co-ordinator Tony Granger, it read: “On behalf of ZEBRA I would like to thank you and your team for collecting bras and underwear in the Basingstoke area for despatch to needy women in Africa.

“We are most grateful and appreciative of your Basingstoke and Hampshire team and their collection activities and would be pleased if you could pass on your thanks to them.”

Mr Good said as all the donations are made anonymously he wanted to share the letter with people to know their generosity had made a difference.

He added: “I just wanted those who did donated to know that they really are making a difference.”
