THIS is the moment a daring thief attempted to break into cars in a quiet residential street in Basingstoke.

CCTV footage shows the confident man, wearing a hooded jumper, pulling the handles of car doors shortly before 3am on Tuesday morning on Hazelwood Close in Winklebury.

A resident’s security camera picked up the activity which shows the man, illuminated by the street lights, shamelessly trying to break into the cars.

The home owner told the Gazette: “This has been happening a lot recently. We have noticed they are not trying the newer cars but older vehicles.

“The scary thing is they aren’t trying to hide what they are doing – one man was trying the car on our neighbour’s drive.”

The resident said that while their road was quiet, Winklebury had been suffering recently with numerous incidents.

“Our actual street is peaceful with a nice mix of neighbours but we often have the police dealing with youths at the nearby Ashwood Centre and then there is the underpass where officers are often chasing people on mopeds,” she said.

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for comment.
