POLICE are investigating after a home in Old Basing was burgled this morning.

A thief broke into the property in the Fraser Close area between 9.30am and 10.30am.

It is the latest incident of its kind in the area in recent weeks.

Last week the Gazette reported how burglary was being considered as a 'major' problem in parts of the town following a rise in incidents.

Basingstoke Cops took to Facebook to write: "Have you seen or heard anything unusual or suspicious recently? Do you have any information that may assist Police with their enquiries?

"If so please contact Police by calling 101 quoting reference number 44190376921."

Giving advice to the public, the police gave the following advice:

• Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.

• Ensure rear fencing is in good repair.

• Lock all windows and doors, remembering to double lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn the key)

• Keep all keys out of reach and sight from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through).

• Do not leave ladders and garden tools in your garden, lock them away in your shed.

• Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges.

A police spokesman said: "Remember most of these offences are opportunist in nature and by taking even simple precautions you can greatly reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim. Remove temptation!!

"You are more likely to be burgled if your property is unoccupied, security is weak and the burglar thinks they will not be seen/ get caught."
