BOXERS put on a five-star performance as they defeated a team from Germany on a night of boxing in aid of charity.

Olympian hopefuls showcased their talents at the annual Basingstoke Deane Rotary International Boxing event, held at Hampshire Court Hotel in Chineham. And it was England who won with a 5-2 victory. Charley Davidson (pictured right) was awarded the best overall boxer.

The bar was set at a high level from round one as Charley came out all gloves blazing with a powerhouse display that saw the referee halt the fight with Estella Werner part way through the second round.

Charley’s first-class boxing display won her the Overall Best Boxer award, and her winning example set the trend as the next four England boxers also chalked up victories, before Kevin Boakye-Schumann and Dariuz Lassotta were on the right end of split decision judging verdicts and got Germany on to the scorecard.

The sports stars were not the only winners as the event raised thousands of pounds for good causes supported by Basingstoke Deane Rotarians.

The club’s president Alf McCarthy said: “This year’s event was moved to October as it increased the chances of involving more top young boxers from both countries and it was worth the wait. We saw some of the best-ever bouts that have graced the ring in the 20 years we have been organising this event.”

Mr McCarthy thanked the sportsmen and women for taking part and paid tribute to the event’s main sponsors Southern Communications, Champion Group and Centerprise International.
