HUNDREDS turned out to pay their respects at Remembrance Sunday events across Basingstoke this weekend.

In the town centre, spectators lined the streets to watch a parade of servicemen and women which ended with a service at the War Memorial.

The mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Diane Taylor, laid a wreath at the War Memorial on behalf of the borough and following the service, led by the Mayor’s Chaplain.

This year’s march began from the bandstand in War Memorial Park and ended at the War Memorial, 10.45am. It was there at 11am that the crowds fell silent in a mark of respect to the fallen men and women.

Following the service, a parade marched through the Top of The Town and ended in London Street.

On November 11, for Armistice Day, residents and dignitaries once again gathered around the War Memorial to observe two minutes silence.

After a few brief words, Cllr Taylor laid a wreath on behalf of the borough council, while a representative from the Basingstoke rotary club also laid one.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council scaled back their commemorations this year and did not have a marquee, as was the case in previous years.

In London, the Royal Family lead the nation in paying respects to its war dead at the traditional wreath-laying service at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
