FOR more than 20 years it has been a destination for those in search of a late night snack to grab a bite to eat.

Located in New Street, Top of The Town, Charcoal Grill has been a location for people to go for a quick bite to eat or for a takeaway treat.

But many might not know that it was simply by chance that the eatery opened up in town.

Owner Akram Ram, whose business is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year along with its sister restaurant Pizza World, revealed it was a chance conversation with his business partner that led him to opening a store up in the town.

Akram said: "There was an opportunity to open a business in Basingstoke and we fell in love with the town."

He added: “In those early days it was a bit of a struggle because we were a new business, but I really liked Basingstoke and in time our customer base grew.”

And it is this loyal customer base which has grown over the years which has led to the company being a staple in the town for so many years.

Mr Ram said that over the years he has seen old and new faces and many returning customers.

He said: “We get to know a lot of our regular customers, whether they come into the shop or they order a takeaway we see familiar faces who come and enjoy our food and keep coming back.

“There are some people that come maybe twice a week.

“We are in a good location in the town and I think that has helped us and people know where we are, and we are always having a chat with all the customers.”

The establishment has always maintained a high standard or quality, with it being rated four out of five by the food standards agency during its last inspection.

Mr ram added: “We love Basingstoke and think it is a really great town to do business in.

“The customers are always happy and that is what we love about this town.”
