THIRTY firefighters have been dealing with a blaze in a residential block in the town centre this evening.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue Fire Service have been dealing with the incident in Skyline Plaza, Alencon Link, which is believed to have been caused by a candle.

Six fire engines and special appliances from Basingstoke, Overton, Tadley, Hartley Wintney and Odiham attended the fire, which was called in at 5.51pm.

Firefighters used two breathing apparatuses and a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the scene, but no injuries were reported.

The incident is now under control with a few engines remaining for "normal post-incident duties".

A spokesperson said that only one, non-emergency call came in about the blaze, saying it was "lucky" that they responded so quickly.

They have also urged people to use candles wisely, making sure they are extinguished before leaving the building and they are not near flammables or furniture.

The spokesperson continued: "There was a fire in a flat on the second floor.

"We used two breathing apparatuses and one one main jet, as well as a ventilation fan to clear smoke from the lobby.

"Make sure that no candles are left unattended and put candles out before leaving the premises."

South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire Constabulary have both been contacted for comment.
