BASINGSTOKE businesses have been criticised for trying to cash in on the coronavirus pandemic.

Spicy Tadka in Festival Place posted a Facebook message telling customers to “Kill any viruses with Indian antibiotic sources” adding: “Come and join us for authentic Indian dishes full of many natural antibiotics sources such as turmeric, ginger, cloves and many more. Let us all say NO to any sort of viruses and welcome a happy normal life.”

However, the Indian restaurant was criticised by some who described the post as “extremely poor taste” given the current severity of the situation with the spread of coronavirus.

A member of staff from Spicy Tadka told the Gazette the post wasn’t claiming their food could kill the coronavirus, explaining: “It can’t kill viruses, but it will improve your immunity and fight any viruses.”

She added: “If the government tells people to avoid public places you can still order food if you don’t want to come to a public place.”

Asked if the restaurant was worried about business if a lock-down is imposed, the member of staff replied: “No, it’s not about that.”

A convenience shop in Cranbourne is selling bottles of hand sanitiser for £4.99.

As most supermarkets and shops have sold out of the product, the Family Shopper in Antsey Close is flogging small bottles for inflated prices.

The Gazette has been unable to contact the Family Shopper for a comment.
