THE prime minster has said he “hopes to get to see” his 77-year-old mother on Mother’s Day – just moments after advising elderly people to be careful about the transmission of coronavirus.

Speaking during his daily press conference today (Friday), the Mr Johnson was quizzed over his plans for Mothering Sunday in two days’ time.

Larissa Brown, of the Daily Mail, asked the prime minster: “It’s obviously Mother’s Day this Sunday – are you urging people to say away from their mothers, and will you be seeing yours?”

Mr Johnson responded with a word of caution about people in “vulnerable” groups, including the elderly, people with serious underlying health conditions and people in the later stages of pregnancy.

He noted that he is “sure people will handle that advice accordingly” before admitting he is hoping to see his own mother this weekend.

The prime minster said: “As for Mother’s Day, my advice would be that people should really think very carefully about, irrespective of whether they are visiting their mothers, any elderly person who may be in a vulnerable group.

“It doesn’t matter whether they’re necessarily over 70 the issue is whether they are in one of the vulnerable groups. Think very carefully about the risk of transmission of the virus and follow the advice, look at the medical advice.

“Our advice is that elderly people, people with serious underlying health conditions, people in the later stages of pregnancy you have to be careful about the transmission of the virus. And I’m sure people will handle that advice accordingly.

He added: “And I’m in regular contact with all members of my family but I’ll be working very hard on Sunday I can tell you that much.

“I’ll certainly be sending her my very best wishes and hope to get to see her.”
