BASINGSTOKE'S MP Maria Miller wishes the prime minister a 'speedy recovery' in the fight against Covid-19 after learning that Boris Johnson had been transferred to intensive care.

Boris spent the night in a London hospital after his coronavirus symptoms worsened.

The 55-year-old was given oxygen but not put on a ventilator, cabinet minister Michael Gove said.

Foreign secretary Dominic Raab has been asked to deputise for the prime minister.

Maria Miller told the Gazette: "My thoughts are with the prime minister and his family and I wish him a speedy recovery under the care of the medical experts at St Thomas’s Hospital. This shows anyone can catch Covid-19 and that is why it is so important for all of us to carefully follow the guidance, stay at home and help stop the spread of this appalling disease."

She also posted on Twitter: "PM's intense sense of duty to our country during this crisis kept him at his desk despite #Covid19 symptoms. All thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as he gets important expert medical help needed."
