POLICE have released more information after breaking up a house party in Basingstoke last night.

Officers were called out just after 8.30pm yesterday (Saturday, January 16) after "several reports" that there was a house party in Popley.

They attended Guernsey Close, where they found six people from different households.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Officers spoke to the individuals inside the property who were advised about the current Government guidance.

"An investigation is underway with a view to reporting the individuals involved for summons following a Covid breach."

As previously reported, the occupants of the house claimed to be "unaware" of the ongoing pandemic because "they never watch the news".

Posting to Twitter, a force spokesman added the hashtag “there are no words” to describe the incident.

The force’s social media posts about the incident have been widely shared by hundreds of people, attracting dozens of comments.

Many questioned the force about the action taken against the alleged party hosts.

Under coronavirus laws police have the power to issue fixed penalty notices of £200 to first-time offenders, and fixed penalty notices of up to £10,000 for holding or being involved in the holding of an unlawful gathering.
