Missing in Middle Brook Street was the mobile butcher and flower stall, instead there were around 20 stalls selling arts and crafts and clothing.

The market is now set to be held every third Sunday of the month.

It will give artists a relatively cheap outlet for their work and address the shortage of places fro them to sell their work in the Winchester area.

The day which attracted 20 art-sellers have been hailed a big success and more are keen to take part on July 18.

Organiser Jackie Edwards said the first day was a huge success. “The footfall was constant throughout the day; in fact at 10am there was more people in the market than in the High Street! When we closed at 4pm there was still people coming to buy.”

One seller, Lynne Davies said: "I can honestly say that I have more successful selling my work here than any gallery I have shown in so far and will certainly be back, the public was very appreciative of my work and many have said the market was much needed in Winchester.”
