A HAMPSHIRE charity has launched a dual appeal for more funds and volunteers.

St John Ambulance will be calling at homes in the Winchester, Test Valley and New Forest areas to ask residents to become long-term supporters of the charity.

The first aid organisation is also calling on more people to learn vital lifesaving skills.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said: “Each year, 150,000 people die in the UK because no-one can help – 58 per cent of the population have no confidence in knowing what to do in an emergency.

“Luckily for young Molly Bloomfield, from Winchester, her dad Gareth did know what to do when she lay lifeless on the ground after falling off a swing. He brought the four-year-old back to life with rescue breaths and gentle heart massage.”

Pat Morris, commander of St John Ambulance in Hampshire, said: “We depend heavily on private and corporate donations, because we do not receive any Government funding for our first aid duties.”
