TRIBUTES have been paid to a long-standing Hampshire judge who has died after a brave battle against cancer.
Jeremy Burford QC, who was 69 and lived near Alresford, principally sat at Southampton Crown Court but also at Winchester.
Judge Gary Burrell QC said: “Judge Burford was extremely well-regarded by all his brother judges and court staff alike. He was an extremely intelligent man with a witty and nicely ironic sense of humour. He was bright, determined and in the latter stages of his illness an enormously brave man.
“He will be sorely missed here and remembered for many things including his detailed knowledge of cricket and sports generally.
“Our thoughts go out to his widow and stepson.”
Richard Onslow, speaking on behalf of the Bar, said: “Appearing before Judge Burford was a continuing education. We shall miss him.”
In Winchester, tributes were paid at the Law Courts by the Recorder of Winchester, Judge Keith Cutler and Nigel Lickley QC Judge Burford was born and educated in South Africa, becoming a BA in Cape Town. He moved to Cambridge, where he gained an MA and continued his studies at Harvard. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1968 and was appointed a QC in 1987.
