A new campaign has been launched to encourage more families to walk with their children to school.

A poll of 473,160 pupils by Hands Up Scotland indicated 42% of those surveyed regularly walk to school.

Now, the Scottish Government’s Greener Scotland division is hoping to boost that number by working with a school in Edinburgh.

Craigentinny Primary pupils, including junior road safety officers Robyn Devine and Harry Grant, showcased their walk to school in a bid to encourage others to get behind the initiative.

Sarah Thomson, acting head teacher at Craigentinny Primary School, said: “We are committed to encouraging as many children and families as possible to walk, cycle or scoot to school.

“With the fantastic work our junior road safety officers have been doing to keep the walk to school safer, we hope to encourage families to walk more rather than take the car.”

Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Minister Roseanna Cunningham said: “The Scottish Government is committed to reducing Scotland’s impact on the environment.

“Greener living will help to make Scotland a better place to be – cleaner air, warmer homes, less noise and pollution, as well as better health and fitness for everyone.

“By making simple everyday lifestyle changes today, we will go a long way towards helping Scotland fight the serious consequences of climate change.”
