EMMAUS Hampshire based in Winchester has launched a campaign to add more rooms within its existing community that helps the homeless.
The charity at Bar End needs to raise £140,000 to match money already raised to construct eight new studio rooms.
The additional rooms will enable the charity to house 40 residents (known as companions) by 2020 and provide the three-stage programme of counselling, coaching and training which secures their entry back to independent living.
The charity has already raised £140,000 and is appealing to local residents and businesses to match this to complete the project.
Emmaus Hampshire aims to complete fundraising by Christmas 2019 so the new rooms can be opened in Spring 2020.
The new rooms will be created by converting space in the upper floor of its warehouse at Bar End. Developing the existing facilities means each flat will cost just £35,000. As a studio flat in Winchester costs nearly £250,000, Emmaus believes this delivers outstanding value for money within the local social housing sector.
Nigel Samuels, chief executive, said: “Project 40@20 is vital for Emmaus and for Winchester. Over the past three years, our unique three-stage approach has delivered 100 per cent success and experience tells us we will see between 8-10 companions return to independent living each year. Winchester City Council recognises that we already save them over £60,000 a year in benefit support alone.”
