A WINCHESTER photographer has created something positive out of coronavirus.

Sam Gavins is producing a book about the lockdown to raise money for the Winchester Hospice, which like all charities has seen its income stream dry up.

She has taken photos of 126 households and is calling the book Winchester Locked Down - Portraits in a Pandemic.

With each photo is a story or comment from the family about the lockdown. Vanessa Fields writes: “A time to remember... the sun shone, we had time together, life was simpler, quieter and precious!”

Sam has also taken a number of pictures of the impact of the pandemic, turning the city into a ghost town for several weeks.

Already some 135 books have been sold, raising over £1,500 for Winchester Hospice. Every sale raises £10 profit all of which will go to the hospice. Sam has set up a donation page

She said: “I hope something positive will come out of lockdown – these photographs and pieces of writing not only capture an important moment in Winchester’s history but will also help raise much needed funds for our local hospice - my target is to reach £2,000.

“Many other photographers have been doing doorstep shoots around the country but I know of no other photographer that is producing a book with the images taken.”
