Owen Sherred has brought the GB Tri Nations title back to Southampton.

The Golden Ring ABC 13-year-old, who lives in Lordswood and is a pupil at Mountbatten School, was one of only two fighters from the Southern Counties region to qualify for the National finals, contested between fighters from England, Scotland and Wales.

Sherred was fighting in the 2004 under-54kg class in Cardiff.

To ensure there are semi-finals and finals the host nation are allowed to have two entries at each weight. This year being in Wales they were able to enter both the Welsh champion and the beaten finalist from the previous year.

The semi-final draw saw Sherred meeting the Welsh runner up, 14-year-old John Probert, from Pembroke ABC.

The first round was a bit slow with Sherred failing to use his height and reach but still just about winning the round.

The second was a bit better and the third was dominated by The Golden Ring fighter, putting him through to the final against experienced Scottish champion, Kian Govan, who boxes for Doon Valley ABC.

This time Sherred started much faster and immediately landed with a solid Southpaw jab to knock the Scot’s head right back.

Several of Sherred’s back hand shots landed and by the third round the ref was keeping an eye on the Scotsman after good pressure from the Mountbatten pupil.

The unanimous decision was a forgone conclusion and the GB schoolboy title has come back to Southampton.
