Southampton winger Nathan Redmond isn't getting carried away

Since Ralph Hasenhuttl’s appointment at the beginning of December, Redmond’s taken his game to a new level.

The 24-year-old has found the back of the net five times in his last seven matches but is adamant he isn’t the only one benefitting from the Austrian’s style of management.

“I’m not thinking about it if I’m being honest,” said the in-form winger when asked if he’s enjoying his best spell in a Saints shirt.

“I’m taking it game-by-game and trying to deliver what the manager wants and work hard for my team at the same time. Everyone has bought into the ethos, and if I’m benefitting from that, I’m pretty sure everyone else is.

“He has simplified the game and made me realise that working hard for the team is just as important as taking six, seven, eight or nine touches in the wrong areas.

“I’ve tried to take everything he has said on board as I do with every manager, and if that’s enough for him then perfect.

“You can see the performances from Prowsey, Ori [Romeu] and Stephens - everyone is benefitting.”

Saints can now look forward to a period of serenity following a frantic run of games.

Since the turn of the year, they’ve played Chelsea, Derby [twice], Leicester and Everton, which has inevitably taken its toll on the fitness of the squad.

But with crucial games coming up against Crystal Palace, Burnley and Cardiff, Hasenhuttl’s side have the chance to begin their ascent up the Premier League table.

And Redmond reckons these matches will shape the remainder of Saints’ season.

“I think taking the point at Chelsea was big and then the way we took a win at Leicester as well, we just knew leading into this period that it’s fight or flight,” he continued.

“Everyone is up for the fight just like we were last year.

“But this time, we are starting to affect games early and play games with our authority rather than just hoping for something to happen.”

Discussing what the squad will do between Saturday’s win and the match with Crystal Palace, Redmond added: “We will be recovering, working hard and starting straight away on the Palace game.

“We’ll have one or two days to break down the Everton game and look at some of the things we did right and some of the things we did wrong and then take it from there.

“We have a clean week, so we can switch off for the first couple of days and then we will be straight back on it.”
