Twenty six players from Wellow Tennis club participated in a round robin tournament sponsored by the Royal Jaipur Indian Restaurant in Landford.

The format of the tournament, which was run by club treasurer Dave Pinch, involved mixed doubles pairs competing over five rounds of tennis with partners changing after each set.

The standard of play was high but because of the format all players regardless of standard had a chance to progress to the final.

The final was competed between two very strong and well matched pairs with Cathy Tarvin and Mark Patience eventually overcoming Judy Wallis and Caspar Bryce-Smith 6-3 in a set of high quality and entertaining tennis to win the meal prizes kindly donated by the restaurant sponsors.

Tea and food were provided by the participating club members who also enjoyed a rare day of fine and warm weather.

The tournament also raised funds for a local charity, the Friends of St Margaret’s Church, Wellow is raising funds to renovate and upkeep the church and the grave of the Florence Nightingale who is buried there.

A sum of almost £500 was raised thanks to substantial donations by the tournament sponsor and another local company along with contributions from club members playing in and watching the tournament.
