A PERINS School pupil is preparing to go to the Youth Olympics in South Korea to be part of the Great Britain ice hockey team.

Ethan Lock, 15, started playing ice hockey at the age of five with the Cardiff junior Devils.

At the age of eight, Ethan was called up as an underage to trial with the regional team, and was selected for the squad who went on to win the regional finals. The following year, Ethan was made captain of the regional team in his last year of U11’s. He has been part of the regional team ever since.

After moving from Cardiff, Ethan played for Guildford and played at the national finals. Ethan currently plays for Swindon, the team has just won the league.

He has travelled to Kitchener in Ontario to train with the NHL Tampa bay lightning skills and development coach. In February last year Ethan played in a AAA tournament in Montreal, scoring in all nine games.

In April Ethan was selected to play for England in Bratislava after making his way through the trials.

In December 2022 Ethan was called up to trial along with 48 other players from England, Scotland and Wales to trial for the Great Britain three on three Youth Olympic team who will be travelling to Gangwon, South Korea on January 14. After almost a year of trials and cuts from the selection process, Ethan was successful in making the team of 11 players and two goalies.

In May 2023 Ethan was called up for the Great Britain U16’s men’s five on five team trials. He has since been called back to another two trials and hopes to be called back for the last trial in February where if successful he will represent Great Britain in the Riga cup, Latvia in April.

Ethan is currently in contact with hockey schools in North America in the hope to make a team for the 2024/2025 season and continue his dream to hopefully one day turn pro.

Ethan is actively looking for sponsorship to help facilitate his hockey career if there are any companies who are looking to sponsor an up and coming athlete, get in touch: louise.lock1978@gmail.com.
