Hursley Park cricket is mourning the death of Keith "Tug" Wilson, who played for the club for three decades from the late 1960s and into the 1980s. His funeral service was held at Romsey Abbey yesterday (Thursday).
A typically fearless right-hand bat and medium-pace bowler, Keith played soccer for Gillingham and Saints before a knee injury cut short his career, which began with his home town club Hull City.
"On the field he was a very competitive Yorkshireman, keen to speak his mind but equally enthusiastic to pass on his knowledge to youngsters, of whom Adie Aymes, the former Hampshire wicketkeeper was one.
"He was one of the great characters who would grace the bar after the game with a pint of beer and huge cigar," reflected long term Hursley Park team mate Chris Westbrook.
His son, John played soccer for Waterlooville and Bashley and Keith was regularly on the touchline watching him.
