Fauks breaks the ice for Town.

Romsey Town 2, Petersfield United 0.

The determination of new midfield player Gary Fauks was a key factor in putting Romsey on their way to a sweet revenge win over Petersfield.

Romsey were on top for much of the game, but had to fight every inch of the way for the vital breakthrough which finally came early in the second-half.

Fauks, signed from Colden Common, slotted into midfield alongside Jamie Hookway and, with Hookway pulling the strings, it was no great surprise when Fauks broke the deadlock.

He gained possession on the edge of the Petersfield penalty and after his first shot had rebounded back to him off a defender, he unleashed a second effort which struck a Petersfield central defender on the head and spun over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Petersfield rallied for a spell and forced a couple of corners without managing to trouble Romsey goalkeeper Mike Hookway and, generally, it was Romsey who stayed in command.

Tommy Donaldson, who had an excellent game on the left-hand side of Romsey's midfield quartet, had a shot pushed on to the crossbar by Petersfield's impressive goalkeeper who also saved well from Chris Jones.

But there was no escape for Petersfield 15 minutes from the end when Donaldson went on a dazzling run and his pass intended for Mark Williams bounced off a defender. It was immediately snapped up by Williams, who made no mistake.

Romsey had also dominated the first-half and manager Trevor Holmes felt they could have been at least three goals up by half-time.

Donaldson sent a great shot on the run flashing past a post, Carlin brought the Petersfield goalkeeper to a superb save and Chrissy Jones also caused problems for the Petersfield defence with some telling crosses from the right.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Romsey travel to neighbours Stockbridge, who they have already beaten twice this season. They pipped them 1-0 in the League and then knocked them out of the Hampshire Senior Cup on penalties.
