Romsey closed their Hampshire League 2 campaign with another hard fought win at neighbours Millbrook.

Losing full-back Dougal Trentham within the first ten minutes was a blow to Romsey but replacement Dave Newhall slotted well into the line-up.

With the clock running down to the interval Romsey fly-half Graham Noble set off on a mesmeric run from just within his own half.

Leaving three would-be tacklers in his wake the jinking run was brought to an end ten metres from the line. Momentum drove the Romsey forwards on to secure the ruck and drive to the target.

Hooker Ben Hewitt was on hand to dive through the melee and score in the corner.

After the break an early penalty gave Newhall the chance to open his Romsey points account - which he did with the help of the woodwork.

Within minutes, however, Millbrook hopes were given a boost. Driving into the home side's territory Romsey looked set to exploit a two-man overlap. But a pass was intercepted by the Millbrook winger who powered through the place the ball under the post - ensuring the conversion.

Buoyed by the unexpected gift Millbrook stepped up a gear, putting the visitors under pressure from which a slight respite was gained when Newhall landed another penalty. Romsey were unlucky when, moments later, tight-head and recent try-machine James Still was held up having crashed over from short range.

As the match drew to a close Millbrook made final efforts to snatch victory yet Romsey were able to control the surge and kill off any hopes when flying winger Andy Stewart broke out to gallop in for a closing try.

While guaranteed promotion to Hampshire 1 for next season, Romsey now await the result from Aldershot & Fleet's visit to second-placed Eastleigh to find out whether they go up as champions or runners-up.
