SIR: Referring to the ‘fossil fuel’ protesters.

In their enthusiasm for their cause they have made the assumption that oil is a villain of civilisation and overlooked several vital aspects.

Oil is a lubricant needed by all forms of machinery and is the source of plastics in hospitals etc.

It is used in synthetic rubber - tyres - and is the source for many building materials.

In fact the list is endless the more you think about it and the conclusion must be that far from being a villain, oil is a benefactor.
